A €1.2 million investment in Marsaskala's fish landing facility is now operational, aiming to improve safety, efficiency, and hygiene for the local fishing community.

The project, inaugurated by Fisheries Minister Anton Refalo, includes a new concrete quay, upgraded pontoons, and a dedicated ice-making plant. The facility also features improved lighting, CCTV surveillance, and better waste management systems.

According to the Ministry for Fisheries, the upgrades are designed to support the operational needs of fishermen while ensuring higher standards of food safety and environmental protection.

For Malta's small-scale fishing sector, which operates across a fragmented coastline, such infrastructure investments are critical. The Marsaskala hub serves as a key landing point for catches destined for local markets and restaurants.

The investment signals continued government focus on the blue economy, though the sector faces long-term challenges from overfishing, fuel costs, and EU quota restrictions.

Local fishermen have long called for better facilities to reduce spoilage and improve working conditions. The new ice plant addresses a specific pain point, allowing catches to be chilled immediately after landing.

Minister Refalo said the project reflects the government's commitment to modernising the fishing industry. No further details were provided on future phases or similar upgrades for other ports.
