The BOV Foundation has financed the restoration of an 18th-century painting of Our Lady of the Rosary at Maria Reġina Parish Church in Marsa. The work, attributed to the school of Francesco Zahra, is an oil on canvas typical of the Maltese Late Baroque tradition.

The conservation was handled by PrevArti, led by founder and senior conservator Pierre Bugeja. The painting had suffered from earlier interventions and layers of overpainting, making the work urgent.

The Bank and the BOV Foundation are proud to help yet another community preserve a work of art that reflects Malta’s rich cultural heritage and the devotion of its people.

The restoration process included removing accumulated dust, deteriorated varnish, and previous retouching, consolidating the paint layer, strengthening the canvas, and addressing deformations. Losses were filled with restoration gesso using reversible techniques. A new decorative gilt frame was also made using traditional methods.

The restored painting is now back in the church, placed in a more prominent position for worshippers and visitors.

Speaking at the inauguration, Ernest Agius, Deputy Chairperson of the BOV Foundation and Chief Operations Officer at Bank of Valletta, said the Bank and Foundation are proud to help preserve a work of art that reflects Malta's rich cultural heritage and the devotion of its people. He called the support a testament to their commitment to being a trusted community partner.

Culture and heritage is one of five pillars that guide the BOV Foundation's purpose, alongside social inclusion, ethical conduct, education, and environmental sustainability. The Foundation also runs initiatives like volunteering leave for staff, recognising that giving back benefits both communities and employees.

For Malta's business community, this project illustrates how corporate philanthropy can reinforce brand trust while safeguarding the country's artistic patrimony. Banks and other firms looking to deepen local ties may find similar cultural investments a viable route.
