Malta Hosts $750,000 Dota 2 Playoffs as Esports Investment Strategy Takes Centre Stage

Six top Dota 2 teams compete in Malta for $750,000 prize pool as GamingMalta's esports partnership enters its next phase.
Malta hosted the BLAST SLAM VIII playoffs at BLAST Arena Studios in Ta’ Qali from 8 to 11 October, bringing six international Dota 2 teams together for the closing stages of a tournament carrying a total prize pool of $750,000.
Team Yandex won the competition after defeating Team Spirit 3–1 in the Grand Final on 11 October. The victory, played out before a live studio audience, secured the team’s second consecutive BLAST SLAM title, according to GamingMalta.
The Malta playoffs followed an online stage involving 16 international teams, with four days of competition on the island culminating in the best-of-five final.
The event formed part of GamingMalta’s three-year partnership with BLAST, announced in June 2025. The agreement initially provides for nine major international tournaments in Malta, drawing from the organiser’s BLAST Premier and BLAST SLAM circuits.
A central part of that agreement was the establishment of a permanent esports broadcasting facility spanning more than 1,000 square metres, together with an office presence and a dedicated team supporting production and operations. The Ta’ Qali studio hosted this month’s live playoffs.
For Malta’s business community, the commercial opportunity lies in the combination of recurring events and permanent production capacity. A regular tournament schedule could support demand for technical production, audiovisual services, event operations and hospitality, while giving local professionals opportunities to build experience in international broadcasts.
The partnership also includes commitments to local esports initiatives and connections with universities and grassroots organisations. These are intended to help develop career opportunities for Maltese players, content creators and industry professionals.
GamingMalta places the collaboration within Malta Vision 2050’s ambitions for esports, video game development and digital content creation, linking international events with efforts to attract investment and develop local talent.
