BOV scraps planned Chief Risk Officer appointment, restarts search

BOV has dropped its proposed Chief Risk Officer appointment, leaving interim risk arrangements in place while a fresh search begins.
Bank of Valletta has abandoned its proposed Chief Risk Officer appointment, confirming that the application will not be taken forward. The bank's latest company announcement, issued on 9 October 2026, refers to an earlier notice from 23 June 2026. No reason has been offered for the reversal.
The search for a permanent CRO now starts again. BOV has not given a date for the next appointment, and whoever is chosen will need to secure regulatory approval before taking up the role.
In the meantime, the bank's existing temporary arrangements for managing and overseeing risk will remain in place. BOV said these arrangements are intended to ensure the risk management function continues to operate effectively and independently while the recruitment process is under way.
The announcement also touched on Roderick Bartolo, the bank confirming that no matters concerning him require disclosure under the Capital Markets Rules. BOV said it looks forward to continuing to work with him on specialised projects and other initiatives.
For a listed bank, scrapping a senior appointment without explanation sharpens scrutiny of its leadership pipeline. The CRO position carries direct responsibility for independent oversight of risk, and the next appointee must pass a regulatory bar that a failed candidature may have complicated.
What happens now depends on how quickly BOV can convert a fresh search into a regulator-approved hire. Until then, the interim structure carries the burden of keeping risk management both effective and independent.
