Bank of Valletta has put a number on loyalty: 376 employees, 5,200 years of combined service, and four careers that stretch back 40 years. The figures emerged at the bank's annual Long Service Celebration, where 83 staff were recognised for 30 years or more with Malta's largest bank.

The more telling number for the business may be 165. That is how many employees reached their first five-year milestone, evidence that the workforce is not just ageing in place but replenishing itself.

“Behind every BOV achievement are our people; serving customers, supporting one another and bringing our Strategy to life each day.”

CEO Kenneth Farrugia framed the evening in people terms. "Behind every BOV achievement are our people; serving customers, supporting one another and bringing our Strategy to life each day. These milestones reflect our culture and the careers generations have built at BOV. Above all, this is a thank you to our colleagues and their families.

Their dedication has shaped the Bank we are today."

Farrugia's language matters because retention is a strategic metric in financial services. Long careers translate into institutional memory, regulatory know-how and customer relationships that cannot be hired quickly off the market.

Chief People & Culture Designate Lawrence Schembri pointed to the daily mechanics of building that depth. "Careers are built one day at a time. Every milestone reflects someone who has learned, adapted and contributed. By helping our people grow and thrive, we build the skills and culture needed to deliver our Strategy."

The recognition covered employees from teams across the bank, with milestones ranging from five to forty years. BOV has kept taking on new joiners across the organisation over the past two years, even as the broader world of work shifts.

That combination is the real story for Malta's business community. Veteran staff provide stability and context for clients during product and regulatory change, while newer employees bring fresh skills for the bank's next phase.

Whether the current five-year cohort will stay for 40 is an open question. For now, the 5,200-year figure signals an institution with rare depth of experience, and a leadership team that is treating retention as part of strategy.
