Summer construction ban on demolition and excavation extended to Sept 2026
Malta bans demolition and excavation works in tourist zones from 15 June to 30 September 2026, aiming to reduce disruption for hotels and residents.
Malta will prohibit demolition and excavation works in selected tourist zones between 15 June and 30 September 2026, the Malta Tourism Authority has confirmed.
The measure is coordinated with the Building and Construction Authority and targets the noisiest, most disruptive phases of construction. The authorities are acting under Subsidiary Legislation 623.08 (third Schedule 1c).
The MTA said the ban addresses the inconvenience that construction sites cause to surrounding residences and hotels. The agency described the demolition and excavation phases as a particular burden on the tourism industry and on Maltese families living in these areas.
Businesses and developers planning projects in the affected localities should factor the four-month window into their schedules. Any illegal demolition or excavation work during the ban can be reported to the BCA on 138 for both Malta and Gozo.
The MTA is the competent authority that identifies the localities and roads where the prohibition applies. It reserves the right to change or amend the list of roads as it deems necessary.
